Tornado Causes Injuries, Damage Along Coast

National Weather Service

Three people have sustained minor injuries after a tornado hit the North Carolina coast. The roof blew of an Atlantic Beach condo, with a couple inside, and flying debris hit a Carteret Community College student.

The National Weather Service office in Morehead City issued a tornado warning last night. Forecaster Lara Pagano said a water spout moved onto land.

“A water spout that moves on shore is then considered to be a tornado,” Pagano explained. “It hit Atlantic Beach and then headed on to Morehead City and points north of that. So we have gotten reports of trees down, power lines down, structural damage.”

Pagano says the storm caused minor damage to Carteret General Hospital and Carteret Community College.

Utilities say more than 6,000 customers temporarily lost power.
