Officials at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University are making an effort to raise minimum admission standards for future incoming students.
The plan is to raise the minimum grade point average from a 2.7 to a 2.75. North Carolina A&T also wants to increase the minimally-accepted SAT score by 50 points.
Raising these standards will benefit students and make the university more competitive with others in the state, said A&T’s Associate Vice Provost Erin Hill Hart.
“We've always wanted to be a preeminent land grant university that attracts high-achieving students as a first choice,” said Hart of the historicallyy black university in Greensboro. “So it really goes along with the university's vision and mission.”
Officials are also discussing setting a minimum score for the math portion of the SAT.
“We've been attracting students that are high achieving, but we're just looking at what modifications we may be able to make and adjust to better position students for success,” Hart said.
Currently, the school's minimum overall SAT score is 880 out of 1,600.
