Members of the state’s largest teachers’ organization woke up to the news this morning that their dues would no longer be automatically deducted from their paychecks. Dave DeWitt reports.
Dave DeWitt: Kristy Moore is an educator and runs the Durham branch of the North Carolina Association of Educators. This morning started off like any other, but as she was getting her daughter ready for school, she heard some disturbing news: Long after she had gone to bed, the state legislature had voted to override the governor’s veto of a bill ending the NCAE’s payroll deduction.
Kristy Moore: I never thought I’d see the day that lawmakers would disrespect individuals who were in the trenches every day.
The new law was pushed by Republicans in the general assembly. The NCAE has a history of supporting democratic candidates.
The law only disallows the NCAE’s payroll deduction. Members of other organizations, like the State Employees Association of North Carolina, are still allowed to have their dues deducted from their paychecks.
