NC GOP Convention Pushed Back To June By Virus

The North Carolina Republican Party's state convention is being delayed by three weeks due to the new coronavirus emergency. The state GOP announced that the convention will now be held June 4-7.

Party Chairman Mike Whatley said last weekend that the convention set for May 14-17 in Greenville was still on but suggested venue and schedule changes were possible. He said Thursday the alteration was made in light of numerous safety regulations issued to respond to the outbreak.

The event will still be held at the Greenville Convention Center. Whatley told Republicans that hotel reservations and event ticket purchases made so far will be honored.

The Republican National Convention is still set for late August in Charlotte. Whatley has said the Republican National Committee "is firmly committed to moving forward" with the convention, where President Donald Trump would formally accept the GOP nomination.

Both the state Democratic Party and GOP are holding online or virtual county and district conventions this year.
