Attorney General Roy Cooper's bid to be Governor has significant labor support. The North Carolina chapter of the AFL-CIO is throwing its endorsement behind the current Attorney General.
Along with Cooper, the state chapter has endorsed Deborah Ross for U.S. Senate, Josh Stein for Attorney General and former Raleigh Mayor Charles Meeker in his campaign to be Labor Commissioner.
In a statement, the organization says these candidates would offer new representation and leadership that would bring increased wages and economic stability. Gov. Pat McCrory's camp was quick to blast the endorsements. His re-election campaign said the AFL-CIO endorsement is just the latest pro-labor attack against the governor.
In a statement of its own, McCrory's camp says the AFL-CIO has a radical agenda and supports policies that would bring annual tax increases of thousands of dollars to North Carolina families. The AFL-CIO is the largest group of unions in the United States.
McCrory and Cooper are expected to face off in the general election, following the March 15 primary.
