Alamance County To Create Park Around Mountain

Alamance County Parks and Recreation and several other conservation groups want to turn the Cane Creek Mountains natural area into a park.

The mountain sits at 991 feet above sea level and is also on 1,000 acres of land. The goal is to preserve the land while allowing people to enjoy it.

"The ultimate goal is to have a large tract of land pieced together that is open for public recreational use," Piedmont Land Conservancy Executive Director Kevin Redding said. "It doesn't necessarily mean soccer fields or baseball fields. It means hiking trails and opportunities to get out in a natural setting."

So far, the county and the conservation groups have 600 acres of the land. They still need to secure the rest and need the funding for it.

If they're able to acquire the rest of the land, the park will open next summer.

"By protecting something like this today, each year it's going to become more valuable to everybody that utilizes that property because it's so hard to find," Redding said.

The park is expected to include up to 15 hiking trails and an observation tower.
