Navy Removes Device Found On Newly Formed Island Near Buxton

Shelly Island is reopening to the public after authorities removed an item they suspected was an unexploded military device.
A ranger at Cape Hatteras National Seashore says the U.S. Navy picked up the item Friday afternoon.
Neither the military nor the National Park Service has identified it.
Earlier on Friday, authorities evacuated the new island that recently formed near Buxton after Dare County Emergency Management was alerted of the device.
The Navy sent a bomb disposal team to the mile-long sandbar along the Outer Banks to inspect it, according to Dare County Emergency Management Director Drew Pearson.
A portion of the one-mile stretch falls within the boundaries of Cape Hatteras National Seashore in the Cape Point area.
The sandbar has been a popular tourist destination this summer, after it emerged from the water over the last several months.
