High Point University President Nido Qubein was once again the highest paid leader of a college or university in North Carolina.
His total compensation of $2.4 million was sixth highest in the nation. Compensation data are published by the Chronicle of Higher Education. Pay for private university leaders is from 2016, the most recent year for which comprehensive financial reports are available. Pay data for public college leaders are from 2018; public universities have different financial reporting requirements than private, not for profit institutions.
Former Duke University President Richard Brodhead received $1.3 million in total compensation and Wake Forest President Nathan Hatch received $1.1 million in total compensation. However both of their base salaries were higher than Qubein's. The High Point president took home more in total compensation because he received nearly $1.7 million in what the university classified as "other pay."
At the state's public universities, the chancellors of UNC-Chapel Hill and N.C. State, Carol Folt and Randy Woodson, took home nearly identical total compensation of about $870,000. Margaret Spellings, head of the overall University of North Carolina public university system, received $894,000. Folt and Spellings no longer work in the UNC System.
