UNCG And NC A&T Receive $500K Grant To Create Research Network

UNC at Greensboro

The University of North Carolina at Greensboro and North Carolina A&T State University received a $500,000 grant to build a high-speed research data network.

The Gate City Research Network will connect the two largest universities in the Triad with each other. The goal is to enable faster and easier sharing of research with scientists around the world.

The network will support research activities through a low-latency, high-speed Internet connection.

The two-year grant is funded by the National Science Foundation.

“A state of the art network will help fuel innovation, spark economic growth in our region, and enable us to deliver meaningful scientific breakthroughs,” UNCG Chancellor Franklin Gilliam Jr. said. “It will also further deepen the existing partnership between UNCG and N.C. A&T, helping to connect our outstanding scientists with collaborators around the world.”

UNCG will manage about $342,000 of the grant and NC A&T will manage the rest.

“This is an exciting opportunity for researchers at N.C. A&T, UNCG and their collaborators from around the globe,” NC A&T Chancellor Harold Martin said. “My expectation is that this new data network will assist our researchers in strengthening existing partnerships and creating new partnerships that will produce innovative solutions to some of the world’s persistent challenges.”
