Flight of the Conchords: Hilariously Deadpan

Flight of the Conchords.
Flight of the Conchords.

Billing itself as New Zealand's "fourth most popular guitar-based digi-bongo a cappella-rap-funk-comedy duo," Flight of the Conchords has already begun to take the U.S. by storm. The duo of Bret McKenzie and Jemaine Clement met in the late '90s while sharing a flat in New Zealand. Though each had experience writing and playing other instruments, they both decided to learn the guitar and quickly began writing comedic songs. The duo self-released its only album of music, Folk of the World, in 2002; a follow-up EP, The Distant Future, just came out.

As word of mouth spread, Flight of the Conchords landed an improv show on BBC Radio and appeared on HBO's comedy series One Night Stand in 2005. Critics in America appreciated the pair's deadpan wit, catchy lyrics and dynamic stage presence. Most recently, McKenzie and Clement have won glowing reviews for their hilariously deadpan HBO series Flight of the Conchords, which made its debut earlier in the summer.

This segment originally aired on July 5, 2007.
