Tim Finn: Timeless and Time-Tested

Tim Finn.
Tim Finn.

Singer/songwriter Tim Finn has been writing charming, piano-driven pop and rock music for nearly three decades, both as a solo act and as leader of the new-wave/art-rock band Split Enz.

Born in New Zealand, Finn was influenced by the classic sounds of British Invasion bands like the Beatles and Kinks, but also by the music of New Zealand's native Maori people. After achieving international success with Split Enz in the late '70s and early '80s, Finn released his first solo record, 1983's Escapade, scoring several hits in the process. Finn left Split Enz the following year, releasing his second solo disc (Big Canoe) in 1985. However, it wasn't until the release of his 1989 self-titled album that Finn hit his stride as a solo act. His output through the next decade remained consistent, with his songs sticking close to his timeless and time-tested pop style. Finn's newest album, last year's Imaginary Kingdom, finds him sounding more rejuvenated than he has in years.
