WUNC Takes Home Five Murrow Awards

The Radio Television Digital News Association (RTDNA) has awarded WUNC five Edward R. Murrow Awards, including the regional award in overall excellence.

The Murrow Awards honor outstanding achievement in electronic journalism.

WUNC's competition region includes stations across North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Kentucky, and West Virginia. This is the seventh year in a row WUNC has received regional awards.

The 2017 regional Murrow awards were given to WUNC in:

Overall Excellence

For depth and scope of stories, consistency, quality of features, and online presence, WUNC won a Murrow award in regional overall excellence.

Rural counties across the state are not experiencing the economic recovery underway in the Triangle, Triad or in the Charlotte Mecklenburg region. The unemployment rate is higher, the poverty rate is higher and the high school drop-out rate is higher. Race and Southern cultures reporter Leoneda Inge spent several months exploring these issues with students, teachers and administrators at Vance County Schools.

UNC basketball coach Roy Williams called the 2016 team his favorite team, and Carolina fans agreed.

The buzzer-beating loss of the National Championship crushed spirits in Chapel Hill.

Villanova defeated the Tar Heels by 77-74.
