Lawmakers made impassioned speeches at the General Assembly on Wednesday over a controversial social bill. Ultimately, Republican lawmakers failed to override Democratic Gov. Roy Cooper's veto of the "Born-Alive" Act. The legislation would have created a new crime against doctors and nurses who fail to care for an infant delivered during an unsuccessful abortion.

In our weekly review of state politics, Becki Gray, of the John Locke Foundation, and Rob Schofield, of NC Policy Watch, discuss the issue, its potential political repercussions, as well as the latest in a years-long redistricting battle.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011. During his 20 years in public radio, he was Morning Edition Host at WFDD and WUNC’s Greensboro Bureau Chief and later, the Capitol Bureau Chief. Jeff has covered state and federal politics, produced the radio documentary “Right Turn,” launched a podcast, and was named North Carolina Radio Reporter of the Year four times.
