When local elections officials from across the state met this week for a training, the head of the state board cracked an inappropriate joke. He resigned a day later, and left in limbo a question about what kinds of voting machines will be certified for 2020.

Becki Gray, from the John Locke Foundation, and Rob Schofield, with NC Policy Watch, review the Week In State Politics. They also talk about campaign finance reports through the first half of 2019, and an investigative piece from WRAL about one childcare organization that is receiving millions of dollars in federal funding, despite having lost it's state license to operate.

Jeff Tiberii is the co-host of WUNC's "Due South." Jeff joined WUNC in 2011. During his 20 years in public radio, he was Morning Edition Host at WFDD and WUNC’s Greensboro Bureau Chief and later, the Capitol Bureau Chief. Jeff has covered state and federal politics, produced the radio documentary “Right Turn,” launched a podcast, and was named North Carolina Radio Reporter of the Year four times.
