North Carolina's Attorney General is warning state residents to not be swindled in the wake of the Oklahoma tornado tragedy. Roy Cooper says he understands that there are many North Carolinians who want to help the people of Oklahoma, but he urges people to do their homework because there are scammers who see the Midwestern tragedy as an opportunity to take your money.
Cooper says some easy signs of charities that aren't what they seem are pushy telemarketers and those that openly ask for your personal information. He also says it's more often than not unwise to respond to unsolicited emails seeking money for relief efforts. Cooper says people should also watch for donation requests on social networking sites. He says unless you know the sender personally, there's no way to verify how your money is being used.
Cooper says our hearts go out to the tornado victims, considering the deadly storm outbreak North Carolina went through two years ago. He says if you suspect a charity scam, report it to the Attorney General's office.
