Until recently, Back Door Slam appeared to be the next big blues-rock band, armed with a powerful album (2007's Roll Away) and a charismatic frontman (Davy Knowles). But the trio split up this year, before re-emerging as a more Knowles-centric group called Davy Knowles and Back Door Slam. Click the link above to hear the band perform live in concert from WXPN and World Cafe Live in Philadelphia.
Knowles was born and raised on the Isle of Man, an island near the U.K. Growing up, he was inspired by the blues — and specifically his father's record collection, which taught him about artists such as Eric Clapton and Peter Green. He founded Back Door Slam with his high-school friends in 2001, and spent recent years performing at festivals and touring with the likes of Gov't Mule and The Who.
After Back Door Slam broke up, Knowles went to work with the legendary Peter Frampton, who produced Knowles' follow-up album, Coming Up for Air. Knowles' soulful guitar work has been compared to that of Clapton and Jimi Hendrix — no small feat for a guitarist who's still only 23.
