For more than 15 years, Chicago-born musician Michael McDermott has been writing and recording smart, personal, relatable rock 'n' roll music for a national audience. Hear the singer-songwriter perform a concert from WXPN and World Café Live in Philadelphia.
After leaving college in the late '80s to focus on playing gigs around the Midwest, McDermott signed his first national label deal in 1990. A year later, he released his debut album, 620 W. Surf, which produced a sleeper hit single with "A Wall I Must Climb." The next decade and a half spawned a string of fine albums, from Gethsemane and Michael McDermott in the '90s to the more recent likes of 2001's Last Change Lounge and 2004's Ashes. His new disc, Noise from Words, is McDermott's most autobiographical album to date, and addresses themes of addiction and recovery.
