As guitarist for Broken Social Scene, Andrew Whiteman has played in one of Canada's biggest indie-rock acts, but after a brief period living in Cuba, he became enraptured with Latin music. Looking for an outlet for that obsession, Whiteman formed Apostle of Hustle with drummer Dean Stone and upright bassist Julian Brown.
Regular live performances eventually led the group to the studio, where it recorded 2004's Folkoric Feel between gigs touring with Broken Social Scene and its many offshoots. For the new National Anthem of Nowhere, Whiteman opened up the production possibilities, bringing in a wider array of instruments and spending more time in the studio. The result is a more expansive and inventive sound that encompasses traditional island folk and Cuban pop as well as indie-rock.
