The Derek Trucks Band in Concert

The Derek Trucks Band.
The Derek Trucks Band.

Now in its 10th year, The Derek Trucks Band is led by guitarist Derek Trucks, the youngest performer to make Rolling Stone's "100 Greatest Guitarists of All Time" list. With an emphasis on improvisation, The Derek Trucks Band blends jazz, rock, blues and world music into its soulful, energetic songs. The group performed live from WXPN and World Cafe Live in Philadelphia on Aug. 18.

Trucks began playing guitar at 9, started his first band at 12, and released his first album with The Derek Trucks Band in his teens, garnering comparisons to everyone from Stevie Ray Vaughan to John Coltrane. The group has expanded over the years, adding keyboardist and flutist Kofi Burbridge in 1999 and vocalist Mike Mattison in 2002. Its latest addition, Count M'Butu, doesn't yet play on every tour, but brings a world-music feel with his congas and other percussion.

The Derek Trucks Band's fifth album, Songlines, is a nicely crafted collection of original compositions and covers, all reflecting the band's diverse approach to worldly jams.
