Trey Anastasio, the former frontman for the jam-band superstars Phish, has a new solo record out: Shine.
The album is a departure for Anastasio, if only because it represents his work that came after he helped dissolve Phish, a band that had become an obsession. Twenty years of tours and albums had led many to compare their legions of fans to those that followed the Grateful Dead.
The music on Shine is tighter, and more pop-oriented than Anastasio's previous work. While part of that sound stems from not writing for a massive-sounding touring band, it is also the result of Anastasio's decision to turn away from the drug-oriented atmosphere of many of his old band's shows.
