Beach Nourishment

The Hatteras Island beachfront has eroded rapidly and caused the collapse of about 20 houses since last fall. The Army Corps of Engineers plans to repair broken jetties later this year, and Dare County is planning a beach renourishment project, but the fix will be too late for many homes.

A similar project begins in Avon later this month, and others are scheduled to start throughout the summer in Buxton, Nags Head, Kitty Hawk, Southern Shores and Duck.

For folks who live on North Carolina’s Outer Banks, keeping up with storm patterns is a pretty common routine. But in recent years, keeping a watchful eye on the horizon has meant bracing for more severe damage to the coast.

It's unclear exactly how long the 'foreseeable future' is. These projects are expected to become more expensive over time. Regardless, residents say they will support these replenishment efforts.
