The stories were crafted during a summer program of the Partnership for Appalachian Girls’ Education (PAGE) for girls in grades 6 through 9. The youth in the program worked with facilitators to write, edit, and voice “digital stories” that say something about their lives. As a collection, these stories give an impression of what it’s like to grow up as a girl in the mountains. They chronicle an array of experiences, from the life-altering like navigating foster care or accepting a loved-one’s disability to an everyday story about making the perfect doughnut. The series aired during All Things Considered September 18-22 on WUNC.About PAGEPAGE is a collaboration between Madison County Public Schools and Duke University.
