'Made in America': The Other Schuman

William Schuman spent most of his professional life as a music administrator. He was president of the Juilliard School, director of publications for music publishers G. Schirmer and president of Lincoln Center.

But he also found time to write highly imaginative music. Gerard Schwarz, music director of the Seattle Symphony, points out how Schuman wrote the opening of the fugue in his Third Symphony for two under-appreciated instruments of the orchestra: the snare drum and the bass clarinet. Aaron Copland called Schuman "the find of the year."

In this installment from the Made in America Festival, we hear Schuman's Third Symphony, played by the Seattle Symphony in Benaroya Hall, under the direction of Gerard Schwarz.
