Hopes for a High Speed Train

Railroads have a long history in North Carolina. But until very recently, few travelers thought seriously about trains as a way to get from point A to point B. Now, train travel in the state is about to get a big boost: Hundreds of millions of federal stimulus dollars could fund a high-speed rail line that would link Charlotte, Raleigh, and Richmond Virginia. More

 

The Story

Connie and Steve Rice both have years of teaching experience, but both lost their jobs in Oregon's massive teacher layoffs. Steve's middle school kids even staged a walkout in protest. Since then, Steve has been re-hired, but Connie hasn't. Also: reeled into selling time shares. More

The State of Things

Banjo virtuoso Béla Fleck rediscovers his instrument on its continent of origin. Fleck's new CD, "Throw Down Your Heart," features his banjo alongside artists from Uganda, Tanzania, Mali and Gambia. More
