The Story

Sara Isaacson has dreamed of a military career since she was 13 years old. When she enrolled at the University of North Carolina on an ROTC scholarship, she identified as straight. During her senior year, three months away from graduation and a commission as a 2nd lieutenant in the U.S. Army, she came out as a lesbian to her commanding officer. She was de-enrolled from the ROTC program and was asked to pay back nearly $80,000 of her scholarship. Sara talks with Dick Gordon about how she made her decision and whether, if given the chance, she would still serve. More

Shortly after she was featured in a documentary on the foster care system, Risa Bejarano was brutally murdered. A suspect was charged with her death and footage from the documentary was brought into the courtroom by the prosecution. The film helped the jury see Bejarano as more than a victim. It helped them understand who she was as a person and the prosecuting attorney used this to his advantage in successfully obtaining the death penalty for her accused killer. More
