'My Finest Work Yet:' Andrew Bird's New Album On Our 'Enemies That Make Us Whole'

Andrew Bird is a singer-songwriter, violinist and master whistler. Over a two-decade career, he's created a singular body of work that is literate, beautiful, touching and at times playful.

Bird's new album is called "My Finest Work Yet," and it would be hard to argue otherwise.

In the album, Bird tackles the moral and ethical dilemmas presenting themselves in today's world. The song "Archipelago," he explains, is the thesis of the record.

"That concept is 'enemies making us whole,'" Bird says. "Why do we find ourselves in this deepening quicksand of animosity and divisiveness? It's because there's something missing in ourselves and we're seeking out enemies to fill this void."

Tift Merritt will be opening for Bird July 13 at the North Carolina Museum of Art in Raleigh.
