Listen: Man Describes Impact Of Mass Shooting On Surviving Family Members

On April 13, 2014, former KKK member Frazier Glenn Cross pulled into a Jewish Community Center and ambushed a grandfather and grandson, killing both. He then killed another woman a short distance away.

What does the family left behind do when they are thrust into a national spotlight? How do they figure out what to disclose and what should be private?

Will Corporon knows - he lost his father and nephew to the violence that day. Listen to his story:

Will Corporon's story is part of a podcast called Criminal. It was created by three WUNC producers on their own time. They describe Criminal as “a podcast about crime. Not so much the ‘if it bleeds, it leads’ type of crime but something a little more complex.”

Friday at 1:44 p.m. during Here and Now as well as Sunday afternoon, WUNC listeners will hear stories from Criminal on the radio.

Listeners will recognize the voice of Phoebe Judge, who is on WUNC every day from 1-4 p.m. She met fellow Criminal producers Eric Mennel and Lauren Spohrer while the three of them were on staff at The Story with Dick Gordon. When that show ended, they started talking about other possibilities for making long-form, character-driven radio. Lauren Spohrer’s love for Law & Order and old crime novels inspired the theme.

On Sunday at 3 p.m., WUNC is airing an hour-long Criminal special. Stories include:

  • Dr. Andy Morgan has worked with the FBI, CIA, and the military to find a more accurate alternative to the polygraph. According to Morgan, shows like Sherlockand Lie to Me are getting deception all wrong.
  • Next, we meet a man who believes that Durham’s Kathleen Peterson was not murdered by her husband, Michael Peterson, but died after an owl attack.
  • Finally, we meet a college-educated woman who used a laser printer to launch a counterfeiting scheme in her Brooklyn apartment. And it worked.
