Raleigh Marks 9/11 Anniversary With Volunteer Day

Raleigh is holding a day of volunteering and "doing good" to mark the 11th anniversary of the 9/11 terror attacks. Isaac-Davy Aronson reports, the city is hoping it will become a new annual tradition.
Isaac-Davy Aronson: Lacie Lindstaedt is with Downtown Raleigh Alliance. It partnered with the city and an organization called Activate Good to create Activate Raleigh.

Lacie Lindstaedt: President Obama made September 11th a national day of service a few years ago. And what we've done is trying to promote that to the community of Raleigh and just give a way to remember the day and to give back that day.

Lindstaedt says more than 11-hundred people have signed up to volunteer for blood donations, food drives, gardening projects, and neighborhood cleanup efforts. The response has heartened city officials, who are hoping to establish the anniversary as an opportunity for positive action. Across the state, flags will fly at half-staff for the day, and remembrance ceremonies are planned at military installations, public schools, and universities.
