House: Construction Stays With Wake School Board

Dave DeWitt

The North Carolina House has voted down a bill that would have handed over school construction and maintenance responsibilities to the Wake County Commissioners.

The bill would have taken that responsibility away from the Wake County School Board. Supporters argued that the county commissioners have more experience in school construction. Opponents warned that the Legislature should not set a precedent in a local dispute.

"This is a terrible idea, to give a billion dollars over to the Wake County Commissioners who have no experience," said Democratic Representative Darren Jackson. "If you want to try this, try it on a small scale. But you shouldn’t get involved in this local matter."

Enough Republicans agreed with Jackson and voted against the bill. The Wake School Board will retain school construction responsibilities.
