The Outer Banks is being spared heavy rain from Hurricane Jose. But National Weather Service Meteorologist Jim Merrell says the coast is still seeing impacts from the storm roiling offshore.
“There's a coastal flood advisory in effect that'll be in effect through late Tuesday and also a high surf advisory, and a high threat of rip currents today," Merrell said. "That'll continue into Tuesday and Wednesday as well."
The ocean is washing over roads on the Outer Banks as Hurricane Jose passes well to the east.
The state Transportation Department ocean overwash has occurred at Pea Island, Rodanthe, Avon and Hatteras village on Hatteras Island. About 4 inches of standing water was reported on NC Highway 12 at the northern end of Rodanthe.
Transportation officials are urging drivers to drive slowly through the water. All roads are passable. The National Weather Service warns of dangerous rip currents along the coast.
“There is a chance of showers mainly along the coast, but not expecting anything real heavy rain-wise,” Merrell said. “Mainly it's some wind and the wave action coming from Jose even as it departs to the North and Northeast of us over the next couple days.”
The track of Hurricane Maria is less clear, but North Carolina is unlikely to see its impacts before next week.
