Snow, Sleet Make For Risky Commute

A wintry mix is falling north of the Triangle, with snow covering Granville, Vance, and Person Counties.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Brandon Dunstan says sleet is falling south of there.

"For the Triangle area, for the most part we're going to see patchy light showers really of freezing rain through the morning hours. And we should slowly warm to near-freezing through the afternoon. It'll be a very cold and dreary day."

Dunstan warns of icy roads and bridges during the morning commute.

Granville, Person, and Vance County Schools are closed due to snow. Winter weather has also closed Wake, Orange and Johnston County Schools, Durham Public Schools and Chapel Hill-Carrboro Schools. Duke University has canceled classes before 10 a.m. today. N.C. State opens at noon. UNC-Chapel Hill has canceled classes until 3:20 this afternoon.

But Dunstan says conditions should let up later today.

"We may actually have temperatures slowly warm overnight. We could have a period of heavy rain develop tonight. Should all turn to just rain as temperatures warm above freezing this afternoon into evening."

Dunstan says high temperatures could climb into the 50s tomorrow.
