Rod Brind'Amour will be honored tonight before the Carolina Hurricanes take on the Philadelphia Flyers. He will have his jersey retired.
Rod Brind'Amour was known as one of the hardest working and toughest players in a sport that places a high value on both. He attributes his drive to his father, a pipefitter in Campbell River, Canada.
"And he always told me 'you better do something different than the next kid if you don't want to end up doing what I have to do for a living.' And so right from then on I decided I have to work harder than the next guy and at least give it everything I have so I don't have any excuses. "
Brind'Amour played 21 years in the National Hockey League - 10 of those for the Canes and 9 for the Flyers. The highlight of his career came in 2006, when the Canes won the Stanley Cup.
Brind'Amour retired before this season and works in the Hurricanes' front office.
