Hagan: Let People Keep Their Health Care Plans

Sen. Kay Hagan (D-NC) says she's joining other Democrats who are calling for health insurers to reinstate recently canceled policies.

Hagan says she supports a bill that was introduced after it became clear that not everyone could keep their plans when the Affordable Care Act took effect.

"I think we knew with a bill this large that there would be fixes that need to be made to make it work better, and this is one of those items now that needs to be changed.  People need to be able to keep their plans," Hagan says.

She has already asked the Obama administration to give people more time to sign up for the federal health exchange.  Hagan also asks to temporarily waive penalties for those who do not sign up for insurance by the March 31 deadline.

"The failure surrounding this launch of healthcare.gov and the online marketplace, I certainly believe, have been unacceptable.  I've asked the administration to extend the enrollment period by two months to make up for the time that's been lost while the online exchange is not functioning."

Hagan says she's also circulating a letter among her colleagues that asks for more details about the government contractor that was responsible for healthcare.gov.  The letter asks how much the website cost, and how to avoid problems with future projects.

Hagan joins several Democrats up for reelection next year who have recently been more critical of the administration for problems with the rollout of the Affordable Care Act.
