Freezing temperatures led Wake and Guilford County homeless shelters to issue a white flag alert Monday night, allowing anyone who came to the shelters a guaranteed safe place to spend the night.
National Weather Service Meteorologist Barrett Smith said an arctic air mass is responsible for the cold snap. Temperatures have dropped more than 50 degrees since the warm spell around Christmas.
"Later [Tuesday] will be our coldest night. We'll have high pressure overhead, and most of our temperatures will be in the lower 20s. We'll have some teens in the western Piedmont areas and a lot of the outlying areas will also be in the teens, well below 20 degrees," Barrett said.
