A new facility for the treatment of HIV, AIDS and other infectious diseases opens today in Greensboro. It's a joint project between Moses Cone Memorial Hospital and HIV/AIDS care providers in North Carolina. Doctor Jeff Hatcher is the medical director of the clinic. He says it's the only infectious disease facility in the state that offers several different services in one place:
"We have Triad Health Project, who are the case managers who can do some types of counseling. There will be Family Services of the Piedmont, which can do other types of counseling. We have a person who will be on site and on our staff who works with the AIDS Drug Assistance Program of North Carolina to help get medications for patients who don't otherwise have a way to access medications."
Hatcher says the facility could help decrease the prevalence of AIDS in the Southeast. A study from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says North Carolina had 2,000 to 5,000 new cases of HIV in 2006.
