ECU Board Says Chancellor's Job Is Safe

East Carolina University

The chancellor of East Carolina University has the full support of the school’s Board of Trustees. That’s according to the Board’s chair.

A report in Carolina Journal last week stated that Cecil Staton would leave his post, effective January first. Staton has been the chancellor at ECU since 2016. He has reportedly clashed with members of the UNC Board of Governors, including chair Harry Smith.

But ECU Board of Trustees chair Kieren Shanahan said that report was false. Shanahan told Pirate Radio 1250 in Greenville that Staton has strong support across campus.

"I assure you that every member of our BOT believes that Cecil has done not a good, but a great job. So as we sit here today, he is our chancellor and I think that much of that report was erroneous," he said.

Staton was one of a handful of university chancellors who did not get a raise from the UNC Board of Governors last week.
