Wake School Board Split On Superintendent

Dave DeWitt

Tonight, the Wake County School Board will continue its discussions on hiring a superintendent.

It’s been more than two weeks since thethree finalists for Wake Superintendent visited the district for a hectic few days of interviews and public appearances. Wake School Board Chair Keith Sutton initially indicated a new superintendent would be hired within a few days, but delays have pushed it back to tonight, at the earliest.

Former Board chair Ron Margiotta has told several outlets that, the top choice is James Merrill, the Superintendent of the Virginia Beach school system. Margiotta said the Board voted 5-to-4 to hire Merrill, but contract negotiations have stalled the process. Ann Clark, the deputy superintendent of the Charlotte/Mecklenburg Schools, is the reported second choice.

Wake County is the largest school district in the state and the 16th largest in the country.
