Chatham County Commissioners have accepted a bid to rebuild the historic courthouse in downtown Pittsboro. The courthouse was damaged by a fire in March of last year. The project will cost 4.4 million dollars. Project manager Brian Stevens says the courthouse will maintain its historic charm and character.
Stevens: "It's the center piece to the town for everybody's memories. And everybody's interested in having it go back just like it was you know, for its historic value and for a lot of peoples memories. The interactions they've had with the courthouse down here, you know people have been married in there and things like that."
The first floor of the new courthouse will be devoted to the non-profit Chatham Historical Museum. The second floor will be restored as a courtroom, with judges chambers. The renovation is expected to be complete by the fall of 2012.
