ncdcr.org

North Carolina's role in the Civil War is the subject of a photo exhibit opening today in Fayetteville at the Cumberland County Public Library. "Freedom, Sacrifice and Memory" is a traveling show that will visit fifty public libraries across the state.

Fay Mitchell works for the North Carolina Department of Cultural Resources. She says it's important to commemorate North Carolinians who lived and died in the conflict 150 years ago:

"It's not only Confederate Colonels, its African Americans, its women, its the battles, the home front there are artifacts from the Museum of History, there are reenactments that are staged at our state historic sites and there are sketches and illustrations from the period."

Mitchell says the exhibit is a reminder of the more than 35,000 North Carolinians who died during the Civil War. She says the exhibit will move from Fayetteville to the Museum of Cape Fear in two weeks.
