UNC Athletics-Academics Scandal Enters New Phase

UNC

The University of North Carolina has received a new Notice of Allegations from the NCAA. It indicates no new violations beyond those self-reported by the school last fall in the long-running athletics scandal, but the letter no longer references men's basketball and football. Instead, the violations listed focus on just one sport: women's basketball.

In a conference call with reporters, UNC Director of Athletics Bubba Cunningham said the new Noticegives no indication of the possible severity of the penalty.

“We have five allegations and speculating on sanctions is something I cannot do,” said Cunningham. “Five ‘level ones’, lack of institutional control, failure to monitor… those are significant charges.”

Cunningham says the University is cooperating fully, and working towards a “fair outcome.”

The latest Notice of Allegations is the most recent development in a nearly six-year athletics and academics scandal that has spanned multiple sports, including football, men’s and women’s basketball, and men’s soccer.

When asked why the investigation and likely sanctions are taking so long, Cunningham told reporters: “The only explanation is that this is probably the most complicated and involved case in history, certainly in our history.”

The University received the new Notice today, and posted it online a few hours later. It lists several violations made by Jan Boxill, the former instructor in the Philosophy Department at director of the Parr Center for Athletics. Boxill is alleged to have done academic work for women's basketball players.

UNC now has 90 days to respond to the NCAA. Any punishment associated with the violations is likely months away.
