Baseball: NC State Heads To World Series, Carolina Suffers First No-Run Game

NC State

NC State is going to its first College World Series since 1968.  The Wolfpack beat Rice in 17 innings last night, 5-4.  Brett Williams drove in the go-ahead run with a RBI double.

The game was the longest Super Regional in NCAA history.  Coach Elliot Avent says it's fulfilling for his team to break the streak of 45 years without a World Series appearance.

“The '68 team was here tonight and they had been with us through thick and thin.  I will tell the '68 team that all the things on the locker that say 1968, they were ripped down a while ago and the code to the locker room will be changed tomorrow morning.”

Meanwhile, North Carolina plays an elimination game tonight against South Carolina.  The Tar Heels fell, 8-0, in Sunday's game.  Coach Mike Fox says his team will refocus for tonight's game.

“It doesn't get any better than to be able to play just one game for the right to advance,” Fox says. “Momentum in baseball is really from pitch to pitch and from day to day.  These are young guys we're talking about.  They forget things really quickly.  They're all on their phones already.”

Sunday's loss was the only game this season in which North Carolina did not score.
