New Jersey governor Chris Christie was in Wilmington Tuesday Sept. 16 stumping for Republican state Speaker of the House Thom Tillis. He's running against Democratic incumbent U.S. Senator Kay Hagan.
The two spoke before supporters at a restaurant, where Christie told the crowd that he takes his role as chairman of the Republican Governors' Association very seriously:
"I've spent most of my time, almost all of my time, campaigning for gubernatorial candidates," Christie said. "But this Senate race is so important, that on my way to go help Nikki Haley in South Carolina, I want to come here and help Thom Tillis become Senator Thom Tillis come November 4th. You can get it done, I know you can!"
The race is close, but right now Hagan appears to have an advantage. A poll released by Public Policy Polling today shows Hagan leading Tillis by four points, with a big advantage among female voters in particular. An Elon poll released yesterday also shows Hagan leading by four points among likely voters.
