Republican U.S. Senate Primary Candidates Face Third Debate

Theresa Thompson

Tonight, four of the candidates running in the Republican U.S. Senate primary will take part in their last televised debate.

Obstetrician Greg Brannon, Army veteran Heather Grant, Baptist pastor Mark Harris, and state House speaker Thom Tillis will take part in their final scheduled debate this evening on UNC-TV.

The crowded primary field could make for a complicated race- a recent poll by the left-leaning Public Policy Polling casts Tillis as the frontrunner with 18 percent of the vote. But he must get 40 percent of the vote to avoid a runoff. The Tea Party favorite, Greg Brannon, isn't far behind Tillis. The dynamic of a runoff could reshape the race because such an election might energize and encourage particular groups of voters to go to the polls.

But for now, the primary election is looming on May sixth. Tonight's debate is scheduled for 7 o' clock on UNC-TV.
