No Re-Trial For Edwards

John Edwards will not face another criminal trial on charges of alleged campaign finance violations.

Jeff Tiberii: Federal prosecutors filed a motion Wednesday ensuring that there will not be an Edwards trial part two. The two-time presidential candidate and 2004 Vice Presidential Nominee was acquitted last month on one count of accepting illegal campaign contributions. Following nine days of deliberations, the jury was deadlocked on five other felony charges, leading to a mistrial. The U.S. Justice Department will not retry Edwards on those counts. He was indicted last June on charges of using nearly a million dollars from two wealthy donors in an attempt to hide his pregnant mistress. Prosecutors said the money was intended to advance Edwards’s political career, while the defense maintained it was a personal gift used to protect his family.
