Dey Hall Evacuated On UNC-CH Campus Following Electrical Accident

Thursday, January 21: A UNC-Chapel Hill employee was hospitalized after an electrical accident that temporarily cut power for much of campus. Dey Hall and Wilson Library still have no power and are closed.

Wednesday, January 20: An electrical accident on the UNC-Chapel Hill campus Wednesday afternoon injured a university employee and knocked out power across much of central campus.

The accident at Dey Hall left the worker badly burned. The worker was transported by ambulance from the scene. Witnesses say they heard a popping sound just as the electricity went out. Several witness described seeing the worker outside the building with severe injuries.  

Some classes were dismissed early as a result of the accident.

A university statement said the accident is under investigation by the Chapel Hill Fire Department and UNC-Chapel Hill Environment Health and Safety officials.
