In the 1950s, the Keep America Beautiful campaign encouraged Americans to stop littering and simply throw away their trash.

But where exactly is that "away"? Once we toss something into a garbage or recycling bin, it leaves our lives, but where does it go?

Documentarians Margaret Morales and Phil Corrigantrekked across country to find out where trash ends up and how different communities conceptualize waste. Host Frank Stasio talks with Morales and Corrigan about their project, “Finding Away: The Trash Blog."

Longtime NPR correspondent Frank Stasio was named permanent host of The State of Things in June 2006. A native of Buffalo, Frank has been in radio since the age of 19. He began his public radio career at WOI in Ames, Iowa, where he was a magazine show anchor and the station's News Director.
