State Democratic Party Working To Find Replacement For Deborah McManus

North Carolina Democrats are getting ready to nominate a replacement for former state representative Deborah McManus, who resigned yesterday.

A committee of members from McManuses district, which includes both Chatham and Lee counties, will meet soon to suggest someone who can replace her. That recommendation will be passed along to the state party chair and then to the governor, who has 7 days to accept it.

Deborah McManus resigned her state House seat yesterday, after she was arrested on felony tax charges filed by the state Department of Revenue. She's accused of embezzling more than 48 thousand dollars from her husband's medical office, where she has worked as the bookkeeper.

A press release from the department says the money was state Individual Income Tax money withheld between January 2011 to July 2013.

Her attorney, Elliot Abrams, says McManus had been working with the Department of Revenue to handle the situation. He says she was surprised by the charges.
