NCCU Names Johnson Akinleye New Chancellor

North Carolina Central University has a new chancellor. The UNC Board of Governors today introduced Johnson Akinleye as the the school's twelfth chancellor. 

Akinleye has been serving as NCCU's interim chancellor since January. Akinleye pledged to find ways for Central to collaborate with Durham County and the school's home city. 

"In economic development, revitalization of our region and the immediate areas surrounding the university," Akinleye said. 

Akinleye honored his predecessor, Debra Saunders-White, in his remarks to the board of governors yesterday.

"The honor of following her legacy of Eagle excellence is one that I treasure and cherish," he said.

Prior to coming to NCCU, Akinleye served as associate vice chancellor for academic programs at UNC Wilmington. He earned a PhD in human communications from Howard University.
