WUNC's American Graduate Project is part of a nationwide public media conversation about the dropout crisis. We'll explore the issue through news reports, call-in programs and a forum produced with UNC-TV. Also as a part of this project we've partnered with the Durham Nativity School and YO: Durham to found the WUNC Youth Radio Club. These reports are part of American Graduate-Let’s Make it Happen!- a public media initiative to address the drop out crisis, supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting and these generous funders: Project Funders:GlaxoSmithKlineThe Goodnight Educational FoundationJoseph M. 'You've Become More Of A Role Model For Students'

Will Michaels

'It's pretty cool being able to look up to somebody that's actually going through life himself, and becoming a better person.' - Caleb Crawley

WUNC is in the midst of a yearlong examination of what it's like to be an educator, called the North Carolina Teacher Project. This week, we're exploring what it takes to make a connection in the classroom by asking students to interview their teachers.

Caleb Crawley is a senior at Northern High School in Durham, where Matthew Hunt is serving his first year as principal.  Mr. Hunt has walked the halls of Northern High for several years as an administrator, but he played basketball in the Netherlands long before he made his way to a classroom.

Caleb says Mr. Hunt's uncommon story inspired him to pursue his own leadership roles.

Caleb's conversation with Matthew Hunt is part of WUNC's My Teacher series. It's also a part of American Graduate-Let’s Make it Happen!- a public media initiative to address the drop out crisis, supported by the Corporation for Public Broadcasting.

The My Teacher series is produced and facilitated by WillMichaels.
