LISTEN: This Is What A Cigar Box Guitar Sounds Like

Justin Johnson Music

North Carolina musician Justin Johnson makes and collects homemade instruments. Listen to him play "Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down" live in the WUNC studios using a guitar made out of a cigar box:

Justin Johnson's latest album, Smoke & Mirrors, is a collection of pre-World War II songs played on a collection of antique homemade instruments from The National Cigar Box Guitar Museum in Alabama. The two-disc compilation was recorded at the iconic Sun Studios in Memphis, Tennessee and at an old sharecropper's shack in Clarksdale, Mississippi.

Listen to his in-studio conversation with The State of Things host Frank Stasio.
