Ft. Bragg hascanceled their annual 4th of July fireworks show, due to sequestration cuts. Officials there say they just couldn't handle the $80,000 in overtime costs for the annual show. People in the area organized to donate money to save the event, but any donations sent to Ft. Bragg can't be earmarked to one specific program, like the fireworks.Ft. Bragg spokesman Ben Abel says the community has stepped up, though. The city of Fayetteville will host their own fireworks show on Thursday.
"Nobody's really happy that we couldn't have the event on post," Abel says. "But I think that the fact that the community has stepped up, and pitched in and put together what promises to be a pretty good show downtown -- I think that is kind of a testament and a testimony to the fact that the Fort Bragg and the Fayetteville communities are pretty well tied together. We take care of each other when we can."
